Sorcery: Contested Realm

Sorcery: Contested Realm

Explore the World of Magic with Sorcery: Contested Realm

Sorcery: Contested Realm is a new game from Erik's Curiosa Limited, first launched through a Kickstarter campaign in March 2022, where it raised over four million US dollars from 6,456 backers. This game has caught the attention of many, especially among those who love "old school" card games with a unique twist.

A Game for the Rich Imagination

As the developers themselves say, Sorcery: Contested Realm is "an 'old school' fantasy card game for players with rich imaginations, tactical nerve and a sense of hand-painted art." This game is inspired by how Magic: The Gathering was in the 90s, but with a modern touch. It combines the classic card game feel with an innovative grid-based system, where the cards can be placed and moved around on a 5x4 grid.

Game Mechanics: Two Unique Decks

In Sorcery, each player has two different decks:

  1. Atlas deck : These contain "sites" or land cards that produce mana. They form the basis for playing out the rest of your cards.
  2. Spellbook Deck : This contains all creatures, spells, and other cards that can be placed on the board to attack your opponent or defend your avatar.

The goal of the game is to control your avatar and reduce your opponent's life from 20 to 0. When you reach 0 life, you haven't lost yet - you've entered what's called "death's door". You then have one last life left, and your opponent must deal direct damage to your avatar to knock down this last life.

A Unique Strategic Experience

The grid-based system gives Sorcery an enormous depth of strategy. Players must think carefully about how they place their cards on the board, making it a fascinating mix between chess and traditional trading card games (TCG). Every move, every decision, can change the outcome of the game.

Artistic Perfection

One of the most prominent aspects of Sorcery is the art of the cards. With a clear inspiration from "old school" fantasy art, the game uses traditional techniques such as oil paintings instead of digital art. This gives the cards a completely unique visual experience that really stands out in today's gaming market.

A Special Target Group

The game is marketed towards the "old school" environment of Magic: The Gathering, and targets people aged 30+. It's complex and strategic, but if you've played Magic: The Gathering before, you'll be able to quickly pick up the mechanics.
